8th Graders


Reading

  • Reading lists increase in difficulty and are accompanied by Common Core nonfiction articles
  • Students learn comprehensive cultural literacy 
  • The 8th grade program prepares students for high school reading and writing, including honors and AP courses

  • ​Our semester-long enrichment classes are offered at multiple levels 

  • Students learn the tools and strategies they need to succeed in high school English classes

  • Classroom discussion and debate provide students with active engagement

  • Ninth graders practice finding and correcting common grammar errors

  • Students write full-length essays in response to fiction and nonfiction

  • Students will be able to build their cultural literacy skills—their knowledge of mythology, history, and society—with direct instruction and practice

  • All classes include intensive, context-rich vocabulary study with regular tests to build their word power

10th Grade

  • 10th grade students learn critical reading in context 

  • Students practice the analysis skills needed for the SAT and ACT

  • Classes will engage in complex thesis development and an introduction to literary devices and secondary materials

  • A focus on texts in comparison readies students for AP Language/Literature or American Lit Honors

  • As writers, students learn to self-evaluate, correct their own errors, and write drafts that show continual improvement
